Can You Install Solar Panels Onto A Shed Or Summer House Roof?
Shed Roof
Yes, you can install solar panels on a shed roof, provided the structure is sturdy enough to support the weight and installation requirements. It’s essential to consider the angle and orientation of the roof to maximise sunlight exposure. A south-facing roof is ideal, but east or west orientations can still work well, depending on your energy needs and local sunlight conditions.
Before installation, it’s advisable to assess the shed’s structural integrity and any potential shading from nearby trees or buildings that might impact performance, we will take care of this process for you in our initial solar meeting before install takes place.
Summer House Roof
Installing solar panels on a summer house roof is also feasible, as long as the roof can handle the panels' weight and any additional wind or snow loads. Summer houses can vary in design and construction materials, so it is crucial to ensure the roof is well-maintained and watertight before proceeding. Similar to shed installations, the orientation and pitch of the roof will influence efficiency; a south-facing summer house roof will yield the best results.
At the Skill Group, we will evaluate your summer house roof structure before installation and discuss the best placement to optimise energy generation while keeping aesthetics in mind to ensure a seamless install.
What Are The Benefits Of Installing Solar Panels Onto Your Shed Or Summer House?
Installing solar panels can significantly enhance the functionality and efficiency of sheds and summer houses, making them smarter and more sustainable investments. Take a look at some of the benefits below:
Space Efficiency
Sheds and summer houses often have rooftops that are underutilised. Installing solar panels on these structures makes excellent use of available space, generating energy without taking up valuable ground area.
Energy Independence
Solar panels provide a source of renewable energy, allowing you to generate electricity on-site. This can reduce reliance on the grid, particularly beneficial for outbuildings that may not be connected to mains power.
Cost Savings
By harnessing solar energy, you can lower your electricity bills. The energy generated can power your home or appliances in your shed or summer house, leading to significant savings over time.
Sustainability
Utilising solar energy contributes to a reduction in carbon footprint, promoting environmentally friendly practices. This is particularly appealing for those who wish to embrace green living and sustainability.
Increased Property Value
Homes with solar energy systems can attract buyers, as solar panels are seen as a desirable feature. Installing solar panels on your shed or summer house can enhance the overall value and appeal of your property.
Flexibility in Usage
Solar power can be used for various applications, such as powering lights, electric heaters, or charging electric tools. This flexibility makes it a great addition for both leisure and practical uses of your outbuilding.
UV Protection
In addition to harnessing energy, solar panels can shield the roofing material of sheds and summer houses from ultraviolet (UV) rays, potentially extending the lifespan of the structure itself.
Aesthetically Appealing
Modern solar panels come in various designs and can complement the look of any shed or summer house, improving the overall aesthetic appeal.
Should You Install Solar Panels On To Your Shed Or Summer House?
Deciding to install solar panels on your shed or summer house can be an excellent decision, especially if you're using the space as a workshop, office, or leisure area, which often leads to high electricity consumption. By harnessing solar energy, you can significantly reduce your electricity bills and lessen your reliance on the grid. This is particularly beneficial if you frequently use power tools, lighting, or heating in these spaces. Despite solar installation being a good idea, it's essential to assess whether on not your shed or summer house is suitable for solar panel installation based on its roof orientation and available sunlight. Solar panels can provide a sustainable energy solution, helping you manage the costs of higher electricity usage while contributing to a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
How Do We Work?
-
Step 1 - About You
You are the most important part of this process. During this step will find out what you are looking to achieve, your property details, current energy usage, and how much you are looking to invest in your solar panel system. We will explain how the system works, the different types of solar panel systems that are available and the different types of battery storage systems.
-
Step 2 - Survey
We can do this in person or remotely by using Google Earth and photos. During this part of our process, we are looking to fully understand everything about your property, particularly the construction materials and methods of the roof elements. We will identify the optimum position, type and number of solar panels.
-
Step 3 - Recommendation
Based on everything we have discovered about you and your home we will recommend the most suitable solar system. It will illustrate the total cost, installation time and potential savings that could be made. We will also show you why we have chosen the system and offer alternative specifications based on cost or performance.
-
Step 4 - Final Checks
If you are happy to proceed we will complete our final checks. We may need to visit the property again to complete a structural report that identifies roof loadings, suitability of fixings, identify the location for the inverter or battery packs, and check the health of your current electricity set up.
Next, we will arrange a booking date, order the scaffolding and the chosen components.
-
Step 5 - Installation
We will erect the scaffolding a few days before we start installation and complete our safety checks. Installation can take between 3-5 days depending on the size and complexity and we will update you at the end of each day. Our work is completed in line with Part A of the Buildings Regulations and Part P Electrical Compliance for the new AC circuit wired to the solar inverter.
-
Step 6 - Guarantee & Aftercare
Before leaving your home we will ensure your solar installation is safe against the elements including leaks from water. We will provide you with instructions on how to use and monitor your systems and what to do if there is an emergency. Next we will register your system with the grid and identify the current best provider for the Smart Export Guarantee. We will issue you with the Manufacturers product guarantee and our work comes with an insurance backed 10 year guarantee.
